Hands On

DarkoverCon features workshops on assorted arts and/or crafts. Past workshops have included regency era dances, spinning, stained glass, working with amber, Japanese braids (Kumihimo), making perfumes, scrimshaw, wax sculpting, etc. The workshops are limited in attendance and require signing up in advance at the convention. Some of the workshops require a materials fee.

Workshop Schedule

Friday

5:00 PM - Making perfume splashes or oils.
Sample the scents of various essential and fragrance oils. Blend your own personal scent in an oil or perfume base.
Limit 12. $3 fee.
Jennifer Heise.

Saturday

10:00 AM - Spinning.
Bring your wheel and spin. Bring your wheel if you're not sure how to use it and get some brain-storming help. Learn to spin on a hand spindle. This can be the beginning of providing your own yarn for knitting, crochet, weaving, etc. Spindles and fiber provided for class, available to purchase if interested.
NOTE: Spinning all day in atrium.
Class Fees are $3 for class, $8 for class and take away materials.
Sarah Fiedler.

11:00 AM - Braiding with Halla.
Details TBA.
Limit 10. Materials fee $5.
Halla.

12:00 NOON - Make-Up 101.
You've just finished the that wonderful costume, now what is that final thing that you need to make it perfect? The right make-up! Make-up 101 will demonstrate various types of stage & street make-up, describe sources, & reference materials available in order to ensure that your character fits its clothes. A hand out will be provided for some of this; be prepared to take notes & ask questions.
Limit 20.
Marty Gear "who has been at this longer than most of us have been alive".

2:00 PM - Stained Glass Demonstration.
Nancy Janda returns to stained glass. Demonstration of various techniques by completing a stained glass panel. Includes design, cutting, foiling, soldering, using wire for detail work & adding texture & patina! Different types of glass & foil will be on display. Finished panel will be on display in the art show.
Limit 20.
Nancy Janda.

3:00 PM - Viking Braided-Wire Ornaments from Birka.
A brief survey of several types of wire ornamentation styles from the Viking-era burials at Birka with an in-depth exploration of one or more of the techniques, including simple braids, twined-wire "cages" for coins, 6 macrame-style knots made from "spun-silver" cords.
Limit 5. Materials fee $10 (includes printed handout).
Heather Rose Jones.

4:00 PM - Enlightened Origami. (2 hours)
Your paper creations can be enlightened — by adding foil and an LED while folding, and tucking a button battery into the finished piece! The folds alone hold everything in place — just loosely enough that many finished pieces flicker like a real lantern. We'll be making one of the following models: a fish, a balloon or a crane. You must be able to fold paper and follow directions to attend this class.
Limit 10. Materials fee $10.
Nancy Janda.

Sunday

10:00 AM - Calligraphy 101. (2 hours)
This class will introduce the uncial hand, which was widely used in late antiquity and the early middle ages. (Like all good hands, it's never completely dropped out of use.) The uncial hand is attractive and is (relatively) simple to write.
We'll start by going through the complete alphabet, letter by letter. Then, in whatever time is left, we'll start putting the letters together into words.
I'll supply felt tip markers and ruled practice sheets. (I'll also have the PostScript code for the practice sheets, in case you want to print out more copies when you get home.)
Limit 10. Materials free.
Brent Warner.
